The Chicago City Council has approved Ordinance O2025-0016754, amending the city’s zoning code to prohibit self-storage development in most business, commercial and downtown districts. Following the revision, self-storage is now permitted only in manufacturing, downtown service, and select planned developments and planned manufacturing districts, according to a source.
Existing self-storage facilities in previously permitted districts will be reclassified as legal nonconforming uses and are subject to limitations on expansion and alterations. The amendment could dramatically slow future development opportunities across Chicago, the source reported.
