Green Storage, which operates 10 locations across Ontario, Canada, opened the first net-zero-carbon self-storage facility in Hamilton. It operates on a combination of solar energy, geothermal heating and cooling, smart-automation systems, and other eco-conscious features, producing as much energy as it consumes, according to a press release.

The site at 7 Studebaker Place also contains a company-managed community garden, where herbs and vegetables are grown and shared with tenants and residents. In addition, the Green Storage team participates in weekly neighborhood clean-ups with environmental organization Green Venture. The self-storage operator is a member of the Downtown Hamilton Business Improvement Area.

The project was built by Net Zero Construction, an Ontario-based builder specializing in energy-efficient development. It comprises 111,000 net rentable square feet in 1,300 climate-controlled and drive-up units.

“We're incredibly proud to open our second location in Hamilton. This facility reflects what the future of storage should look like—sustainable, secure, innovative and community-driven,” said Green Storage President Adam Paulin.

Locally owned and operated Green Storage focuses on eco-friendly self-storage operation, building with LED lighting, time- and motion-activated lighting, solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling systems, energy-recovery ventilation, reusable furnace filters, extra insulation, and low-flow plumbing. It offers community gardens, e-waste recycling, electric-vehicle charging stations and eco-conscious packing and moving supplies to tenants and neighbors, and plants a tree with every new self-storage unit rental. The company claims to be “the first and most eco-conscious storage business in North America.” Its owners have four decades of combined management experience.
