Big Yellow Group PLC received permission from the Leicester, England, City Council to demolish Bridle Lane Tavern, a karate school and car-repair shop at 2 Junction Road to build a five-story self-storage facility. Founded in 1998, Big Yellow operates 111 self-storage locations in the United Kingdom under the Big Yellow Self Storage and Armadillo brand names, with most concentrated in Greater London and Southeast England. Its total portfolio comprises 6.4 million rentable square feet.
Blount Development Group is seeking permission from the Leesburg, Virginia, Planning Commission to build flex space on a 7.8-acre parcel at the corner of Commander Road and United States Highway 27. The project would comprise 34 flex-space units and 1,250 to 1,500 square feet for warehouse, light-manufacturing and office space for local businesses. The commission will vote on the project on Jan. 12. Blount is a land-acquisition and development company specializing in commercial properties including multi- and single-family, self-storage, and senior living.

Franklin Self-Storage, which operates a facility in El Paso, Texas, is developing a second location in the same city. The $1 million project at 10700 Railroad Drive will offer 882 units. It was designed by local firm Roque Architecture.
Graham Real Estate LLC received zoning permission to build a self-storage facility in Richmond, Virginia. Plans for the 9 acres at 12330 Patterson Ave. call for four buildings, including a three-story structure comprising a total of 110,000 square feet. It’ll be part of a 35-acre parcel owned by Nebraska-based Resort Lifestyle Communities, which operates Tuckahoe Pines Retirement Community on the same property. Construction is expected to begin in June and take about 15 months to complete. Virginia Beach, Virginia-based Graham Real Estate is registered to Whitney Graham.
Storage Sense, which operates more than 250 self-storage properties nationwide, opened a new location in Macon, Georgia. The facility at 1630 Eisnhower Parkway comprises 143,725 square feet in 775 climate-controlled units. It’ll be managed by Storage Asset Management, a property-management company based in York, Pennsylvania.
Shurgard Self Storage Europe SARL, the European affiliate of U.S.-based REIT Public Storage Inc., opened a new location in Barking and Dagenham, a London borough. The multi-story building at 1 Alfreds Way, Barking, comprises 89,340 square feet in 1,300 units.

Shurgard also expanded its existing site in Zaandam, Netherlands. The new building offers 600 units, doubling the facility’s size to 97,951 square feet. Shurgard operates 347 self-storage facilities comprising 1.7 million net rentable square meters in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and the U.K.
Wentworth Property Co. LLC opened Store on Pittman at 555 Pittman Road in Fairfield, California. It’ll be overseen by Store Management, a Phoenix-based self-storage management company. Store also operates a facility in Phoenix. Wentworth is a Phoenix-based commercial real estate company that specializes in acquisitions, development and management, with interests in industrial, office, retail and self-storage properties. It launched its self-storage division in 2015.

4 Rivers Property Group and Crow Holdings have partnered to build a self-storage project at 1400 Progresso Drive in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The property will offer 1,276 units across five structures. The five-story, 107,394-square-foot building and single-story, 17,625-square-foot building will be climate-controlled. The three single-story, drive-up buildings will comprise a total of 22,575 square feet. Expected to be complete in November, the facility will be managed and branded by real estate investment trust (REIT) Extra Space Storage Inc. ARCO Design/Build is the general contractor. 4 Rivers and Crow Holdings are real estate investment and development firms. 4 Rivers specializes in self-storage and is working with ARCO on two other projects.
Barefoot Landco LLC purchased a 2.8-acre parcel at 105 Pinewild Drive in Greece, New York, on which it plans to build a three-story, 121-000-square-foot self-storage facility offering 745 units. Barefoot purchased the property from 2016 Gateway Business Center LLC for $650,000, then made a lateral transfer to Pinewild Rochester LLC for $1.15 million. Based in Cape Coral, Florida, Barefoot is a real estate development firm specializing in RV parks and self-storage facilities.
Self-storage REIT CubeSmart opened a new location in Worcester, Massachusetts. The four-story building at 80 Barber Ave. offers climate-controlled units. CubeSmart owns or manages more than 1,520 self-storage facilities across the U.S. Its operating portfolio comprises more than 94 million square feet.
Devon Self Storage and Inland Real Estate Investment Corp. converted a former warehouse and distribution facility in Camden, New Jersey. The property at 1501 Admiral Wilson Blvd. offers 110,000 net rentable square feet of self-storage in 1,070 climate-controlled units. This is the companies’ 19th collaboration. Devon manages more than 190 facilities in 31 states. Inland is comprised of independent commercial real estate and finance entities. It has more than $1.8 billion in assets under management.
Real estate developer and investor DXD Capital opened a self-storage facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. Managed and branded by Extra Space, the four-story building at 8888 E. Desert Cove Ave. comprises 66,750 square feet in 706 climate-controlled units. TLW Construction was the general contractor, with Southwest Capital Bank providing construction financing. Based in Denver, DXD is a real estate and private-equity firm that leverages data technology to make opportunistic investments. It focuses exclusively on the self-storage sector.
Ebert Cos. received approval to build a self-storage facility in Maple Grove, Minnesota. The 2-acre parcel is in a designated mixed-use zone near County Road 30 and Garland Lane N. Plans call for a four-story building comprising 121,700 square feet in 850 units. Founded in 1968, Ebert is family-owned and -operated. It specializes in commercial construction and real estate development in Minnesota.
FI Real Estate Management (FIREM), which operates Cuboid Self Storage Ltd., is seeking permission from the Preston, England, City Council to convert the derelict Perrys Motor Village into a self-storage facility. Plans for the site on Blackpool Road call for a single-story building and outdoor vehicle storage. In 2021, a plan to build 55 homes on the property was approved but never broke ground. It was confirmed to have been abandoned earlier this year. Founded in 2023, Cuboid operates 35 container-storage facilities in England and Wales. FIREM has 40 years of experience in providing workspace, asset and property management in the industrial, office, residential and retail sectors.
Glen Smith Enterprise, owned by Glen Smith, opened GS Self Storage on a vacant lot in West Valley, New York. The facility at 6681 Schwartz Road is built with wood instead of metal to fit in with the aesthetics of the area. It offers drive-up units as well as outdoor vehicle storage.
Leitbox Storage Partners, a real estate investment company that acquires and develops self-storage properties, opened a Storage Sense facility in Marshfield, Massachusetts. The property at 805 Plain St. offers 68,856 rentable square feet in 692 climate-controlled units. Storage Sense operates more than 250 facilities across 21 states. The portfolio is managed by Storage Asset Management (SAM), a property-management company based in York, Pennsylvania.
An appeal by Lyons Center Self Storage to convert a 26,000-square-foot section of Ralph’s Market at 24860 Orchard Village Road in Santa Clarita, California, was denied by the planning commission. The project was unanimously rejected out of concern about spot-zoning for a proposed change to the Lyons Avenue corridor plan. The developer, who owns the shopping center, said they’ve been trying to lease the remaining space since Ralph’s left in 2014. An Aldi market rented some of the building in 2016, but that left the remaining vacant. The initial application was denied in September.
Masons Self Storage expanded its facility in Barry, Wales. The property on Cardiff Road in Priority Enterprise Park now offers an additional 7,000 square feet of space across 100 units, bringing its total to 600 units. The Mason family has operated self-storage in the United Kingdom since 1991 under the Masons, Space Centre and Welsh Self Storage Centre brands.
Northstar Self Storage received permission from the development review board in Brattleboro, Vermont, to convert Martin’s Fireside True Value Hardware store, which closed in 2022, to self-storage. The company plans to build climate-controlled units at 895 Putney Road. The proposed signage, lighting and landscaping need to be approved by the zoning administrator. Northstar operates seven facilities across Vermont.
Nuvo Development has opened a self-storage facility in Magnolia, New Jersey, that’s managed and branded by Extra Space. The three-story building at 517 N. White Horse Pike comprises 112,518 square feet in 870 climate-controlled and drive-up units. ARCO Design/Build was the general contractor. The project was managed by Ben Graber and Tyler de Luna of ARCO, while site superintendent Rich Kraft oversaw the day-to-day construction. Orlando, Florida-based Nuvo has developed self-storage since 1999.
Shurgard Self Storage Europe SARL, the European affiliate of U.S.-based REIT Public Storage Inc., opened two facilities in Paris. The property at 12 rue de Libourne in Bercy Village comprises 29,062 square feet in 800 units. The site at 118 rue de Provence was opened in partnership with car-park operator Indigo. It occupies levels six through nine of the Indigo Paris Haussmann Printemps underground parking garage and offers 1,100 units.
Shurgard also opened a new location in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, a district near Stuttgart, Germany. The five-story building comprises 72,118 square feet in more than 900 units. Shurgard operates 345 self-storage facilities comprising 1.7 million net rentable square meters in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and the U.K.
Storage World Ltd. received permission to convert the former Poundstretcher retail store in Warrington, England, to self-storage. The building on Parker Street was constructed in the 1980s and has been occupied by a variety of companies. Storage World operates three self-storage facilities across Greater Manchester.
Summit Self Storage opened in Summerville, South Carolina. The facility at 1313 Orangeburg Road comprises 97,470 square feet in 696 climate-controlled and drive-up units. The site will be managed by SAM. Summit operates five facilities in the Carolinas and Georgia.
Tourbineau Real Estate Partners purchased the Island Insurance building in Honolulu for $7.5 million and plans to convert it to a self-storage facility. Built in 1940, the five-story structure at 1022 Bethel St. comprises 57,000 square feet. The developer said that because the project is in a dense part of the island, the units will be smaller than normal. There will also be fewer parking spaces, making it a pedestrian-oriented facility. Tourbineau is a Seattle-based developer that focuses on self-storage conversions nationwide. It currently has eight projects in its pipeline.
Trojan Storage, which operates 54 self-storage facilities in Arizona, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington, opened a new location in West Orange, New Jersey. The building at 955 Pleasant Valley Way comprises 85,679 square feet across four stores, including a basement. It offers 657 climate-controlled units. Built using a light-gauge structural steel system, the building was erected on a zero-lot-line site with strict perimeter constraints. ARCO/Murray Design Build was the general contractor. Peter Simmons of ARCO managed the project, while site superintendent Ed Maher oversaw day-to-day construction.
An unnamed developer received permission from the Somerset, England, Council to convert Blackstone Motors on A39 into self-storage. The council approved the proposal because the facility would reduce disturbance for neighboring residents and improve the visual appearance of the site after it was used for car sales and repair for decades.
