Update 11/4/24 – PropRise was named the winner of the startup pitch contest held last month at the Self Storage Hawaii unConference. Building (formerly known as E-States) was the runner-up.

The PropRise platform, Beacon, uses artificial intelligence to help self-storage investors uncover profitable opportunities and make data-driven investment decisions for facility acquisitions and developments. The interface allows users to explore metro areas, access detailed insights and filter data by key metrics.

Beacon’s data includes self-storage rental rates, property details such as size and ownership, and demographic and economic information. The company tracks more than 55,000 facilities and updates rental statistics for more than 35,000 properties weekly, according to the company website.

“We are proud to have hosted the pitch contest,” Jordheim said. “We believe that PropRise has the potential to make a significant impact on the self-storage industry.”

5/31/24 – The Self-Storage Hawaii unConference revealed the four semifinalists for its startup pitch contest, which was launched in January, according to a press release.

The advisory board selected the following companies to advance to the next round:

  • Cactus offers investment-performance visualization, reporting and communication for investors. The company minimizes analyst inefficiencies by automatically delivering reports in real time.

  • E-States helps real estate developers raise capital through smart contracts, streamlining property development, financing, operation and impact measurement. The company will soon be rebranding to Building and expanding its offering with blockchain and artificial-intelligence (AI) tools through a new partnership with digital-data company Inveniam.

  • Hover City designs and manufactures lightweight tiny homes for rapid deployment in remote locations, offering off-grid, modular housing solutions that don’t rely on traditional infrastructure.

  • PropRise Beacon offers an AI-powered analytics platform that provides data insights, demographics, interactive heat maps, zoning information and more.

The contenders will now participate in one-on-one sessions with contest officials prior to the unConference. These meetings aim to provide guidance and support to help the candidates refine their offerings. The advisory board will choose three finalists in July to present their final plans during the live event, Oct. 21-25, in Waikoloa Beach, Hawaii, the release stated.

Posted 1/24/24 - The Self-Storage Hawaii unConference, an annual education event for industry professionals, has launched a startup pitch contest as part of this year’s activities, open to people who are working on solutions for the commercial-property segment in general or sustainable solutions in particular. Attendees with qualifying “proptech” or “greentech” ideas must submit their applications through the event website by April 30. Four finalists will be chosen to present during the live gathering, taking place Oct. 21-25 at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa in Waikoloa Beach, Hawaii.

All four finalists will be considered winners, however, cash prizes will be awarded based on the results of an onsite attendee poll. First place will receive 50% of the cash pool, while second place will receive 25%, third place will receive 15%, and fourth place will get 10%. The total allotment has yet to be determined.

For a proposal to qualify for consideration, the initiative must pertain to commercial real estate or the sustainability and decarbonization movement. In addition, the applicant must already have customers and be generating revenue. This doesn’t include free trials or beta testers. Finally, candidates must cover their own travel expenses and stay at the host hotel, though they’ll receive a free event registration. They agree to attend the opening reception and all three group breakfasts.

An advisory board will evaluate the applications and choose the four finalists, who’ll receive six coaching sessions, including two with event organizer Tron Jordheim. In addition, the idea will be shared with other investors and owners of commercial real estate, including self-storage.

Finalists will have the opportunity to revise and update their pitches before presenting them to a live audience on Oct. 24. Event attendees will choose the order of the winners on Oct. 25. In addition to receiving cash, the participants have opportunities to network with those who might be interested in investing in their idea.

Inside Self-Storage is the headline sponsor for the unConference, which is limited to 100 attendees. The event includes education sessions, networking and a variety of planned activities. Details can be found at hawaiiunconference.com
