Space Station Self Storage, which operates 20 facilities in England, has launched new eco-friendly initiatives as part of its “Going Green” campaign, which aims to reach carbon neutrality by the end of this year. They encompass a range of sustainability efforts, according to the source. These include:

  • Installing solar panels on most of its sites, which currently generate 430,000 kilowatt hours of green energy

  • Using energy-efficient LED lighting

  • Harvesting rainwater and implementing smart meters to conserve water

  • Using recyclable and biodegradable materials to reduce landfill waste, both when building new facilities as well as producing moving and packing supplies to sell customers

  • Encouraging staff to adopt sustainable transportation options

Space Station also provides employees with the OnHand mobile app, focused on helping users make a positive social and environmental impact. By following the app’s eco-friendly tips, they earn points that support tree planting. To date, company staff have contributed to the planting of 1,872 trees.

“At Space Station, we believe in building a sustainable future, and we are committed to reducing our environmental impact,” said Julie Windress, property and asset manager. “We are proud to be leading the way in sustainable self-storage and setting an example for the industry. Our goal is to inspire others to join us in this journey, and we are confident that together we can make a significant difference.”

Founded more than 40 years ago by Alastair Caldwell, Space Station was acquired in 2020 by Heitman, a global real estate investment management firm. It operates locations across Berkshire, Birmingham, London, the Midlands, Northamptonshire and Shropshire, England.
