Western UK Property Group (WUKPG), a developer and investor of commercial and residential real estate, is seeking permission to build a £12 million Shutter Store self-storage facility in Northwich, England, with multiple eco-friendly features, including living walls and electric-vehicle charging stations. The developer is targeting a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology Excellent accreditation, according to a source.

Living walls, also known as green walls or vertical gardens, incorporate plants, often using hydroponics or specialized materials, according to Google’s AI Overview. They can be freestanding or mounted to fixed structures. They not only add a natural aesthetic to a building, they can help improve air quality, reduce urban heat and promote biodiversity. They can even improve humans’ mental health and well-being.

Plans for the 1-acre parcel on Chester Way call for a five-story building comprising 62,000 square feet in 600 units. The structure would also include coworking spaces and a drive-thru coffee shop. It'll be designed by C4 Projects. HK Planning Ltd. is the advisor on the application, with XOsquare Ltd. serving as the structural and civil engineer. If the plans are approved by the Cheshire West and Chester Council, it’ll open in mid-2027, the source reported.

WUKPG acquired the site in 2021 from Adlington Homes, part of Gladman Developments. Originally part of a broader real estate strategy, WUKPG announced in November that it shifted its focus to build a £150 million self-storage portfolio by 2030, the source reported.

Manchester, England-based WUKPG specializes in acquiring value-add properties as well as developing brownfield land and vacant properties. It has completed projects across the U.K. valued at more than £100 million. The company operates an industrial and residential real estate portfolio valued at more than £50 million.
